application for admission
Admission to Colby is highly selective, and students who are admitted have records of strong scholastic ability and achievement. An international applicant must have completed a pre-university course of study and must submit the following documents, which should be sent by airmail, or complete the Colby application and accompanying forms online.

1. A completed Colby application for admission and a nonrefundable $65 application fee in U.S. dollars (by means of an international money order or a check drawn on an American bank). Waiver of the application fee may be requested in writing or online if the fee would constitute an undue financial hardship to the applicant and/or the applicant's family. The fee also waived for those submitting an electronic application.

2. An official record of secondary school work with all courses and grades, including results from appropriate examinations (e.g., IGCSE, "A" Levels, International Baccalaureate, HSC, WASC).

3. An explanation of the grading system used and an English translation of records reported in other languages.

4. Official standardized test results from:

    a. The SAT-Reasoning Test (critical reading, mathematics, and writing) or the American College Test (ACT). One or the other is required of all applicants to Colby.

    b. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) This test is required of all applicants whose first language is not English or whose medium of secondary school instruction has not been English.

    c. Applicants from mainland China may submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in lieu of SAT-Reasoning Test scores.

These examinations are offered at test centers around the world. United States embassies, consulates, and educational resource centers provide information on the examinations and often have descriptive booklets and practice tests available. All required testing must be completed no later than January for entrance in the following September. The Colby College testing code number is 3280.

The candidate's portion of the application, including the application fee, must be postmarked on or before January 1. Appication documents and all other supporting credentials (academic records, personal references, standardized test results) must arrive in the Colby Admissions and Financial Aid Office by February 1. International students may apply for Early Decision, which requires a binding enrollment commitment from the applicant.

financial aid

Non-Canadian applicants for financial aid must complete the Foreign Student Financial Aid Application (available below) along with copies of parents' most recent national tax forms by February 1. If tax forms are not used in your country, letters from parents' employers stating total income and benefits are acceptable.

Canadian applicants for financial aid should complete the 2008-2009 CSS/Financial Aid Profile. (The Colby Aid Application is available by request if you do not have access to the web.)

transfer admission
Each year Colby admits a small number of transfer students into both the fall and spring semesters. Admission by transfer is open to students with excellent academic and personal records at accredited colleges and universities in the United States or abroad. Successful transfer applicants usually have earned at least a B average (3.0), or its equivalent, in a rigorous program of study. Credits from accredited institutions for courses in which grades of C or better have been earned normally are accepted when comparable courses are offered at Colby. Transfer application forms may be obtained from the Admissions Office and must be completed and returned by October 1 for January entrance or by February 1 for September entrance. Financial aid is not usually available for January transfers.

A helpful pamphlet for any international student considering study in the United States is "Entering Higher Education in the United States: A Guide to Admissions and Financial Planning for Students from Other Countries." It is available from The College Board, Office of International Education, 1717 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20036-2093.
