The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) This test is required of all applicants whose first language is not English or whose medium of secondary school instruction has not been English. c. Applicants from mainland China may submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in lieu of SAT-Reasoning Test scores. These examinations are offered at test centers around the world. United States embassies, consulates, and educational resource centers provide information on the examinations and often have descriptive booklets and practice tests available.
