campus and community
Colby's 714-acre (289 hectares or almost three km2) campus is one of the most picturesque in the U.S. It's 62 buildings include a theater, recital hall, art museum, observatory, and extensive indoor athletic facilities. Outdoors are expansive playing fields, a pond, and an arboretum. Colby is located on Mayflower Hill in Waterville, Maine, which is home to some 40,000 people who live in the city and adjacent towns. Waterville is a regional hub for shopping and entertainment and has two major hospitals and subsidiaries of international corporations. The campus is approximately three hours north of Boston by road and about the same distance south of the city of Quebec. The seacoast, mountains, and Maine's largest city (Portland) are each about an hour's drive from campus. Colby is accessible by both public and private transportation. International airports in Bangor and Portland are served by major airlines, and bus and airport limousine service is available from Portland, Bangor, or Boston. Average daytime temperatures range from 27°C (80°F) in August to -6°C (20°F) in January, with many sunny days in all seasons.
