You might not anticipate an international flair on a college campus in Waterville, Maine, but that’s just one aspect of Colby’s active community life that will pleasantly surprise you. Colby’s student body represents 66 countries, and students from around the world—literally from Albania to Zimbabwe—enrich campus life. Every Friday afternoon there is an International Coffee Hour in the Mary Low Coffeehouse, where American and international students, faculty, and staff get together for coffee, tea, discussions, board games, and entertainment. Each spring the International Extravaganza showcases international cultures and costumes onstage in Cotter Union. With more than two thirds of Colby students spending time studying abroad, there is a global perspective throughout the College, and classroom or dining-hall discussions routinely offer global rather than provincial perspectives. In 2005 the Association of International Educators presented Colby a Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization, making Colby just one of five institutions nationwide recognized for its success in international diversification.
