Inspired World Citizenship

Colby is international—in its outlook, in its curriculum, in its extraordinary study-abroad opportunities, in its student body and faculty, and in the impact of its graduates. A Colby student develops a mature curiosity about other cultures and an appetite for engaged global citizenship.

How does studying in Waterville, Maine, prepare students for the globalized 21st-century world?

Thoroughly.

Historically, Colby has been a leader in internationalism, with extraordinary study abroad programs, international diversity, internationalism in the curriculum, and global reach by its graduates. Students don't wait to graduate to make a difference, though. They are actively engaged in national and international affairs directly from Mayflower Hill and, through international study and projects during semesters, Jan Plans, and summers, most Colby students work and/or study in foreign countries before graduating.

Bringing the World to Colby
Colby’s international diversity brings the richness of many different perspectives to discussions in classrooms, dormitories, and dining halls. Currently, students representing almost 70 foreign lands make up more than 10 percent of the student body. Their active participation in classes and in the rest of College life brings a variety of perspectives on world events and about life in America—perspectives essential to understanding the world and America’s place in it.

Taking Colby to the World
More than two thirds of Colby’s students spend time studying overseas before they graduate, and with the Jan Plan students have multiple opportunities to extend their Colby experience around the globe.
