In the fall, the men's crew placed fifth at the Textile River Regatta and was second at the CBB Fall Head Race. The Mules also placed 28th among the collegiate eights at the Head of the Charles Regatta. Women's crew had a strong fall season and is looking forward to an even more successful spring. Colby started the year out taking second at the Textile River Regatta in the fall. The Mules then placed 31st—the best finish ever—in the championship eight meet at the Head of the Charles Regatta. Colby closed out the season by beating Bates and Bowdoin in the CBB Fall Head Race on Messalonskee Lake. Matt Aschaffenburg '06, the CBB golf champion from 2004, had the best score for the co-ed golf team at the NESCAC meet in 2005. The Mules will rely on him for leadership this spring. With many top returning starters, men's lacrosse has an experienced group for the 2006 campaign. The Mules were competitive last year and gained confidence as the season progressed. Colby will be led by captains Jeff Miller '06 in goal and Jonathan Bodansky '06 and Nate Werlin '06 on defense, all of whom were impressive last season. Attackman Ryan Scott '07 leads the offense after scoring a team-best 28 goals last season. Attackman Tim Brown '07 returns as the second leading scorer with eight goals and 11 assists. Adam Kirk '08 and Zach Goodnough '08 tallied 20 goals and 10 assists between them while gaining critical game experience in the midfield along with Dan Schupack '07, who posted eight goals and five assists. Ryan Connolly '07 and Kyle Haskett '07 are coming off productive seasons and will provide leadership on the field. Women's lacrosse headed into the 2006 spring season ranked seventh nationally by Lacrosse Magazine. The ranking is the highest in the team's history after the Mules were rated as high as eighth in last year's national poll before finishing the year ranked 11th in Division III. Colby went 11-5 last year, with all five losses coming against teams ranked in the top 10. Men's outdoor track and field looks like another strong team with the return of event leaders and the addition of several impressive first-year track athletes. Madison Gouzie '08 was the team's top performer last year, in the 110m HH (16.24) and 400m IH (57.03). Other top performers include Bob Glotfelty '08 in the 3k steeplechase (10:11.24); Ian London '07 in the 800m (1:57.04) and 1,500m (3:55.60); Dan Vassallo '07 in the 5,000m (15:19.33) and the 10,000m (32:28.41); Andrew Heaney '07 in javelin (188'10.25"); Mike Aquino '07 in pole vault (12'6.25"); Dave Civitello '06 in discus (148'9.5"); and Jason Foster '06 in the 35-lb weight (57'7.75") and hammer (191'2").
Starr returns after earning All-NESCAC honors her first two years. The Mules should have one of the top pitching staffs in the conference with Olmsted, Lindsey Toomey '07, and Amanda Roehn '08. During the fall season, first-year men's tennis player Bryan Brown '09 advanced to the second round of the "A" singles flight at Bates against Bates's Will Boe-Wiegaard, a national finalist in singles last year and one of the top-ranked players in the country. Brown won the first set, then lost the second, and finally fell 10-6 in a pro set that decided the match, narrowly missing a major upset. Brown also teamed up with Zach Schuman '08 as a solid doubles team. Ben Crane '06 won the "B" flight singles title at Bates's Wallach Invitational, while Tom Gildersleeve '07 took the "D" flight singles title. Tracy Nale '07 played first singles for women's tennis during the fall season and advanced to the second round in singles and doubles at the New England Regional Tournament. Nale joined forces with Ginny Raho '07 as a competitive pair at first doubles. Allison Dunn '07 returns this spring after spending the fall semester abroad. She and doubles partner Sarah Hughes '05 finished third at the National Small College Championships in the fall of 2004. Hughes and Dunn also competed at the NCAA Division III Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., and each earned All-America honors after finishing the year ranked 10th in doubles. |
