Women’s Lacrosse Change is the word for women’s lacrosse, with new head coach Karen Henning taking over in 2008. She won two NCAA Division II national championships at C.W. Post. The Mules finished 12-5 last year, won seven of the last eight games, and made the NESCAC title game before falling 10-8 to Middlebury. Three of Colby’s top-five point producers return: midfielder Kate Sheridan ’09 earned All-America honors for the second year and had 43 goals and 16 assists; Becky Julian ’09 added 22 goals and five assists; and Lauren Strazzula ’09 had 16 goals and eight assists. Heather Nickerson ’09 earned all-region honors at midfield, with 40 caused turnovers, 37 ground balls, eight goals, and four assists. Jamie Enos ’08 and Mary Clare Snediker ’09 return on defense. Softball Softball finished the 2007 season under head coach Dick Bailey with a 17-13 record, including an 8-2 run during the spring break trip to Fort Myers. Third baseman Carlie Minichino ’09 returned from Florida with a .481 batting average, leading the team in RBI and doubles. She hit well throughout the season, ending with a team-high .384 average. Recognized for their major contributions were shortstop and Rookie of the Year Christine Gillespie ’10; outfielder and Most Improved Player Sarah Whitfield ’09; and second baseman, Best Defensive Player, and Most Valuable Player Mollie Puskar ’08. Alaina Clark ’08, Puskar, and Amanda Roehn ’08 are this year’s captains. Men’s Lacrosse Men’s lacrosse will be led on attack by Caddy Brooks ’09, Whit McCarthy ’10, and captain and midfielder Drew Piekarski ’08, the three top scorers from last spring for head coach Rob Quinn. Todd Boertzel ’09 will continue as the workhorse between the lines, playing tough defense and threatening to score. Other contributors in the midfield will be Zach Goodnough ’08, Sam Kennedy ’09, Stew Brown ’10, and Russell Clark ’10. Goalie Alex Farmer ’09 will be between the pipes. Long-stick midfielders Geoff Parr ’09 and Evan Phelps ’08 also return, along with defensemen Jason Forino ’09 and James Brady ’10. Women’s Crew The women’s crew varsity eight finished 2006-07 with a 7-4 dual race record. They were sixth at the New England Rowing Championships, and every women’s crew qualified for the ECAC National Invitational Regatta. With a strong core of seniors who have been mainstays of the program for three years, and with significant contributions in all crews from a solid group of younger rowers, the Mules look to maintain their place among the nation’s best college rowing programs. Men’s Crew The men’s crew varsity eight heads into the spring season after a successful 2006-07 season and a solid start in the fall. The two crews combined last year to win the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin championship and will try to defend this spring in the Presidents Cup. The crew also will look to improve on last year’s fine ninth-place finish at the New England Rowing Championships. Women’s Tennis Coach Doanh Wang takes over the women’s tennis program and will have a young team to work with in the spring season. Alex de Sherbinin ’08, one of only two seniors on the roster, and Nicole Veilleux ’09 will be co-captains. Veilleux played most of last year’s matches at fourth singles and second doubles. Julie Achenbaum ’10 and Audrey Jacobsen ’10 also return after playing together on the third doubles team. Achenbaum played 10 matches at fifth singles and three at fourth; Jacobsen played mostly in the sixth spot. Men’s Tennis Men’s tennis made the inaugural NESCAC tourney last year and returns a number of players for new head coach Doanh Wang. Bryan Brown ’09, who had 13 wins despite missing part of last season, should play either first or second singles. Brown also will be part of the first doubles team. Zachary Schuman ’08 led Colby with 23 wins last year, including 13 singles victories. Tim Fuhriman ’09 (16 wins), Alex Chin ’09 (15 matches), and Nick Rosen-Wachs ’09 (a 9-8 record) also return. Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Anna King ’08 returns for her final track-and-field season after placing fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III Championships for head coach Deb Aitken. King earned her second All-America honor in the steeplechase after placing seventh in her first year. She took second place in the steeplechase at the Open New England Championships and earned All-NESCAC honors for winning the event at the conference meet. Cassi Knight ’10 showed promise in steeplechase with a second at the New England Division III meet and a seventh at Open New Englands. Brianna Kondrat ’09 took seventh in the discus at the New England Division III meet. Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Men’s outdoor track and field lost runners Ian London and Dan Vassallo to graduation but return some talent for head coach Jared Beers ’01. Dan Moss ’08 won the 800 meters at the State of Maine meet and joined forces with Chris DeRoo ’09, John Waller ’07, and Ben Ossoff ’10 to win the 1,600 relay. Bob Glotfelty ’08 won the 3,000 steeplechase at the state meet. Baseball Baseball returns four players who hit .300 or better for head coach Dale Plummer as the team finished fourth in NESCAC in team hitting. Craig Cooper ’09, a tri-captain and Most Valuable Defensive Player last season at shortstop, returns after batting .350. Ryan Conlon ’10 (.317), Colin Riggs ’08 (.320), John LaMantia ’10 (.280), tri-captain Nick Spillane ’08 (.270), and tri-captain and Most Improved Player Kyle McKay ’09 (.268) should power the offense in 2008. All but one of last year’s starting pitchers return: Matt Moore ’10, Justin Clark ’09, Nick Ruocco ’10, Zak Starr ’08, Bobby Whelan ’09, R.T. Tourek ’09, Zach Helm ’09, and the versatile Sam Kennedy-Smith ’08, who led the Mules in innings pitched (39.2). |
