2007 Spring Recaps

The spring season saw nine Colby varsity teams in action. In addition to facing strong competition in the New England Small College Athletics Conference and other opponents, Colby athletes contended with several substantial spring storms.

Women's Lacrosse
Women’s lacrosse had an outstanding year, finishing with a strong showing in the final game of the NESCAC tournament, a 12-5 overall record, and seven straight wins before the 10-8 loss to Middlebury in the NESCAC championship game. The team appeared to be on its way to the national NCAA Division III tournament for the second year straight but was disappointed when the NCAA seeds were announced.

Four women’s lacrosse players were named Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Americans—the most ever in one year for the Mules—tying national champion Franklin & Marshall College and runner-up Salisbury University. Allie Libby ’07 became the first athlete in program history to receive first-team All-American honors twice, and Liz Morbeck ’07 became only the third Mule ever to earn first-team honors. Kate Sheridan ’09 made the second team for the second year in a row, and Lauren Barrett ’08 was named to the third team. Morebeck, Sheridan, and Libby also made the WomensLacrosse.com All-America team.
 
Libby (27 goals, 42 assists), Sheridan (43 goals, 16 assists), Barrett (32 goals, 7 assists), Libba Cox ’07 (12 goals, 12 assists), Heather Nickerson ’09 (8 goals, 4 assists), and defender Morbeck (57 caused turnovers, 52 ground balls) all earned Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Region honors. Libby, Cox, and Morbeck also were invited to play in the North-South Senior All-Star Game.

Libby finished her career with 94 goals and 105 assists for 199 points. She was honored with the Millett Award for contributing the most to Colby athletics in her four years. Cox had 46 career goals and 23 assists for 69 points and had 147 ground balls, 80 draw controls, and 80 caused turnovers. Morbeck had 174 ground balls, 125 caused turnovers, and 66 draw controls and was on the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team. Sheridan, who earned NESCAC first-team honors along with Libby and Morbeck, has proved to be one of the best players in the country with 89 goals, 29 assists, 108 ground balls, 104 draw controls, and 57 caused turnovers in two years.

Head coach Heidi Godomsky ended her final season coaching the Mules, finishing with a 136-82 record in 14 years at Colby.

Women's Outdoor Track and Field
Anna King ’08 placed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships, earning All-America honors for the second time. (She previously earned All-America honors placing seventh in the steeplechase in her first year.) King had a time of 10:40.32 at the NCAA meet, but was faster when taking second place in 10:36.31 at the Open New England Championships. King also earned All-NESCAC honors for winning the steeplechase at the conference meet.

Karen Prisby ’07 and Melissa Cianciolo ’07 also earned All-NESCAC honors. Prisby took second in the 10,000 meters (36:51.72) at the conference meet and then won the 5,000 meters at the New England Division III meet in 17:24.0. She was even faster (17:22.21) finishing fourth in the 5,000 meters at the Open New England meet. Cianciolo placed second in the hammer throw (152-05) and fourth in the javelin at the league meet. At the New England Division III meet she placed fifth in the hammer.
 
Cassandra Knight ’10 showed promise in the steeplechase with a second-place finish at the New England Division III meet and a seventh at the Open New England meet. At the New England Division III meet Brianna Kondrat ’09 took seventh in the discus and Kirsten Davis ’07 took seventh in the heptathlon.

Jennifer Anderson ’07, Chantal Balesdent ’08, Megan Bovill ’07, Anna Bruno ’07, Davis, Sharon Fuller ’08, King, Jamie O’Connell ’08, Lauren Oliff ’07, Brianna Tufts ’07, and Jessie Young ’08 all were named to the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team.

Men's Outdoor Track and Field
Ian London ’07 went to the NCAA Division III Championships in the 1,500-meter run, and Dan Vassallo ’07 was strong all season in the distance events. London was 10th at the NCAA meet, only about one second out of fifth place. He qualified for the national meet with a time of 3:49.27 at the Open New England meet, breaking a 26-year-old school record in the 1,500 set by Kelly Dodge ’83 (3:50.91) in 1981. London set that school record finishing first among Division III runners and second overall. London also earned All-NESCAC honors in the 1,500 taking third at the conference meet, and he won the event at the Maine meet.

Vassallo also broke a school record—one held by Pat Fournier ’98 (31:06.37) since 1996—by winning the 10,000-meter run in 30:52.79 at the state meet. Vassallo was second in the 5,000 meters (15:00.5) at the New England Division III meet and took third in the 10,000 meters at the Open New England meet.

Dan Moss ’08 won the 800 meters at the State of Maine meet and joined forces with Chris DeRoo ’09, John Waller ’07, and Ben Ossoff ’10 to win the 1,600 relay. Bob Glotfelty ’08 was victorious in the 3,000 steeplechase at the state meet.

Brent Aigler ’08, Glotfelty, Moss, Kyle Smith ’08, Vassallo, and Roy Wilson ’07 were all named to the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team.

Men's Tennis
Men’s tennis made the NESCAC playoffs and finished with an overall record of 8-7 on a difficult schedule. The Mules tied for 23rd nationally in the last poll released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

Zack Schuman ’08, who played second and third singles during the season, led the team with a 24-15 overall record. Brody Saunders ’08 played first singles and first doubles and finished at 20-17. Bryan Brown ’09, who missed a portion of the season to illness, went 15-11 at second singles and first doubles.

Saunders earned NESCAC second-team honors in singles and, along with Schuman, in doubles. Tim Fuhriman ’09 had 16 wins, Alex Chin ’09 added 15
victories, and Tom Gildersleeve ’07 won 14 matches.

Colby’s spring season opener, a 6-3 victory over Tufts, was its biggest win of the season and was key in getting the Mules a bid to the NESCAC playoffs.

Interim head coach Hans Romer earned the USPTA New England Regional Pro of the Year Award. Gildersleeve earned the Warren J. Finegan Award at the senior awards ceremony for significant behind-the-scenes contributions to Colby athletics. A captain (along with Schuman), he was instrumental in keeping the Mules together while two assistant coaches served as interim head coaches in the fall season. Gildersleeve, Schuman, and Owen Gilmore ’08 all were named to the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team.

Senior women’s tennis players Allison Dunn ’07 and Tracy Nale ’07 ended their fine careers at Colby leading the team in wins once again. Dunn finished her career with 14 victories this season and an overall record of 82-60. Nale led the team in total wins for the second straight year with 16 this season. Dunn played first singles and joined forces with Nale at the first doubles spot.

Austin Phillips ’07 earned All-America honors, and the crew ended the season ranked eighth nationally. With a 7-4 record in head-to-head competition, the Mules finished sixth at the New England Championships and ninth at the ECAC National Invitational. Co-captains Phillips and Justine Scott ’08 helped the joint women’s and men’s crews win the Presidents Cup over Bates and Bowdoin.

Elyse Atkind ’07, Carolyn Curtis ’08, Val Friedman ’07, Mariah Hudnut ’07, Phillips, and Scott all were named to the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team.
 
Men's Crew
The highlight of the season for men’s crew may have been winning the varsity eight race to help the combined men’s and women’s crews win the Presidents Cup over Bates and Bowdoin. The men also finished 11th at the New England Championships and 13th at the ECAC National Invitational.

Coxswain Michelle Easton ’08 and Sam Fabens ’08 were named to the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team.

Softball
The softball team started the season with a strong showing in Florida and ended up 17-13. The Mules went 8-2 in Florida, with both losses by only one run. Then poor weather in Maine slowed the Mules down. Following a March 30 game in Florida, the team didn’t play again until April 14.

Carlie Minichino ’09 led Colby in batting average (.384), RBI (15), and slugging percentage (.548). Essie Widlanski ’07 (.347 batting average), Alaina Clark ’08 (.333), Tory Starr ’09 (.292), Mollie Puskar ’08 (.286), and Amy Palmer ’07 (.284) were other top hitters.

Alyssa Crowell ’09 pitched the most innings for the Mules and ended the season with a 5-3 record and a 2.82 earned run average. Lindsey Toomey ’07 (4-1, 1.73) and Randi Arsenault ’09 (5-3, 2.38) each threw more than 30 innings.

Miki Starr ’07, a two-time All-NESCAC selection during her four-year career, was honored with Colby’s Patty Valavanis Award for a senior female student-athlete who has demonstrated academic and athletic excellence and personal leadership and sportsmanship. Starr, Widlanski, and Clark were on the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team.
    
Baseball
Tom Salemy ’07 earned NESCAC first-team honors after a terrific season. Salemy led the league in hitting at .467, which was 33 percentage points better than the next-best hitter. He also led the conference in hits per game (1.75), tied for second in total bases (80), tied for fourth in stolen bases (11), and was fifth in doubles (12). As leadoff hitter for the Mules, he had five home runs and 28 RBI.

The Mules (7-22) improved offensively this season with a team batting average of .311. Craig Cooper ’09 (.350), Andy Carr ’07 (.347), Steve Sandak ’07 (.333), Corey Martin ’10 (.327), Colin Riggs ’08 (.320), and Ryan Conlon ’10 (.317) all hit at least .300 with 25 or more at bats. Robert Rosenbaum ’07, Matt Moore ’10, and Sam Kennedy-Smith ’08 each pitched two winning games.

Men's Lacrosse
Men’s lacrosse beat Middlebury in a thrilling 13-12 overtime win March 31 at Bill Alfond Field. The Mules (3-10) tied the game in the final minute, and then Dan Schupack ’07 scored in overtime to set off a rousing celebration.

The Mules had some tough luck during the season, losing four games by one goal, including an 8-7 overtime loss to Wesleyan, which went on to play in the NCAA Final Four.

Caddy Brooks ’09 led Colby in scoring with 16 goals and 22 assists for 38 points. Drew Piekarski ’08 (18 goals, 3 assists), Whit McCarthy ’10 (15 goals, 3 assists), Ryan Scott ’07 (16 goals, 1 assist), and Rory Murphy ’07 (10 goals, 7 assists) were other top scorers.
