In men's tennis Bryan Brown '09 won four tough matches against NESCAC opponents from Bowdoin, Middlebury, Amherst, and Bates on the way to winning the "A" flight title at the Wallach Men's Tennis Invitational at Bates. In the Middlebury Invitational co-captain Zack Schuman '08 earned wins over Bowdoin and Bates opponents to make it to the semifinal round. Men's tennis played a limited schedule in the fall and will play again this spring. In women's tennis Allison Dunn '07 and Tracy Nale '07 each made the quarterfinals in tournaments this fall. The senior duo will lead the Mules into a busier spring season starting in March. The team went 1-1 in dual matches and played in two major tournaments. Dunn and Nale also made the semifinal round of the consolation bracket in doubles. Nale made the quarterfinal round of second singles at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT). Meanwhile, Ginny Raho '07 and Julie Achenbaum '10 advanced to the NEWITT quarterfinal round of second doubles.
The golf team won a dual meet with Maine-Farmington, and the women placed second at the CBB tourney. Jack Peet '07 had the top score for the Mules against UMF. Connor Tubridy '08 had the best two-day total for Colby at the NESCAC Championships, where Jessica Vogel '09 and Jackie Page '07 had the top two scores for the women. In women's cross country Karen Prisby '07 earned All-America honors for the second year in a row, finishing 12th in the national Division III championships in Ohio. As a team the Mules just missed qualifying for the NCAA meet, placing sixth at the New England Division III meet. Prisby, an All American last year after finishing in the top 20 at the national meet, was the top runner for Colby all season. She placed fourth at the New England Division III meet, was fifth at the NESCAC Championships, and won a second straight State of Maine title. King placed second at the State of Maine meet, and Liz Petit '08 took fifth. In men's cross country Dan Vassallo '07 earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Championship meet by placing ninth at the New England Division III meet. He also placed second at the State of Maine meet. John Swain '08 apparently liked running in the rain, placing eighth at the NESCAC Championships at Connecticut College in a driving storm. He was ninth at the State of Maine meet.
The women's crew finished fourth at the New Hampshire Championships and the Textile River Regatta. The varsity eight was 15th out of 57 boats in the collegiate race at the Head of the Charles Regatta. The men's crew varsity eight took fifth in the Textile River Regatta, eighth in the New Hampshire Championships, and 18th out of 51 boats at the Head of the Charles. After the loss of four key seniors from the 2005 NCAA tournament team, women's volleyball finished with a 13-19 record. Kendall Kirby '07, playing at the libero position, earned NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second straight season and was on the league's second team. She led the conference in digs (707) and led Colby in service aces (80). Kirby ended her career as the school's all-time leader in digs. Jenny Lawrence '09 added 952 assists, 340 digs, and 69 service aces from her setter position, and Meredith Lawler '09 showed great promise with 423 kills and 77 blocks. Kirby and middle blocker Julie Hike '09 were invited to play in the New England Volleyball Coaches Association Senior Classic. |
