Winter 2007-08 Previews

Men’s Ice Hockey
The men’s hockey team has made it to the NESCAC semifinal round in six of the eight years the tournament has been held, including last season. The Mules went 14-9-2 last year, and a number of key players return for 2007-08.

All-American Arthur Fritch ’08, who leads the defense, was second on the team in scoring last season, with 12 goals and 25 assists for 37 points, which made him the highest-scoring defenseman in the nation in Division III. He heads into his senior season with 23 goals and 66 assists for 89 career points. Joe Rothwell ’08, who played with Fritch on the blue line and finished third nationally in scoring by defensemen, with nine goals and 19 assists for 28 points, also returns. Rothwell has 22 goals and 46 assists for 68 career points. Fritch and Rothwell are both assistant captains. Matt Strickland ’10 earned Colby’s Defensive Player Award for a solid first year in which he made four goals and eight assists.

Josh Reber ’08 and T.J. Kelley ’08 return to lead Colby’s offense. Reber, a NESCAC second-team selection last year, was third in scoring for the Mules, with nine goals and 25 assists for 34 points. With 24 goals and 74 assists for 98 career points, Reber needs just two points to become a member of Colby’s Century Club. Kelley, a league second-team selection two years ago, made 15 goals and 16 assists last season and, with 37 goals and 46 assists for 83 career points, also is closing in on 100 points. Captain Ryan Chrenek ’08, who finished with seven goals and 12 assists last year, returns at forward along with Mike Butler ’08 and Adam Marino ’08, all in their final seasons.

Women’s Ice Hockey
Colby lost few seniors from last year’s women’s ice hockey squad and will suit up 20 returning players. The team will be loaded with junior and senior talent, including forwards Laura Anning ’09 (33 goals, 31 assists in career), Becky Julian ’09 (28 goals, 21 assists), and Amanda Comeau ’09 (20 goals, 20 assists). Kaitlyn Conway ’10 was the top first-year scorer last season with four goals and seven assists.

The Mules will be deep in goal with Genevieve Triganne ’08 (1,476 career saves, 25 career wins) and Lacey Brown ’09 (410 career saves) both returning. Trigianne played 858 minutes last year, and Brown saw action for 680 minutes.

Men’s Nordic Skiing
Despite a late start last season, the men’s Nordic ski team had unprecedented success in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) and looks for more this year under head coach Tracey Cote, who earned Co-Coach of the Year honors in the EISA last year. Highlights included a second-place finish in the 20-kilometer classic race at the University of Vermont and third place overall at the Eastern Championships at Middlebury. In the classic race at Dartmouth, six Mules placed in the top 22.

Returning skiers include Nick Kline ’08, who placed 25th in the 10K freestyle at the NCAA National Championships and was the top Division III athlete in the 20K classic race, finishing 21st. He also posted solid results in a very competitive field at Spring Series in Presque Isle, Maine.

Last year the Mules had seven skiers in scoring position in carnival races, and all ranked on the NCAA qualifying list. Those returning include Matt Briggs ’09, who placed 11th in the 20K classic race at the Dartmouth Carnival and eighth in the 20K classic at the Eastern Championships. Briggs also qualified for the Junior Olympics after several top Eastern Cup finishes. He placed 10th and was an All-American in the 15K skate race. Austin Ross ’08, John Swain ’08, Silas Gill ’09, and Sam Mathes ’10 all placed in the top 25 in carnival races and were scorers for the team.

A top skier joining the team for the 2008 season is Wyatt Fereday from Boise, Idaho. Fereday was a top junior racer in the Intermountain Region and posted great results last year at U.S. Nationals and the Junior Olympics.

Women’s Nordic Skiing
Last year the women’s Nordic team posted impressive results for a team of five—two sophomores and three first-year skiers. The team placed fifth at the St. Michael’s Carnival in the 5K freestyle race, fifth at the University of Vermont 15K classic race, sixth at the 5K freestyle race at Williams, and sixth in the 15K classic race at the Eastern Championships.

Kathleen Maynard ’09 placed among the top 15 in seven races, including a ninth in the University of Vermont 15K classic race, 11th in the skate and 12th in the freestyle at the Williams Carnival, and 14th in the Eastern Championships classic race.

Rookie of the year Mandy Ivey ’10 placed 16th in the St. Michael’s 5K freestyle race and 18th in the Eastern Championship freestyle race. She also had a 20th-place finish in the 15K classic race at the Dartmouth Carnival and a 21st-place finish in the 10K freestyle race at the Williams Carnival. Jennie Brentrup ’10 and Linnea Rooke ’09 also scored points and will be factors this season.

Joining the team this year is Meghan Cornwall of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, who qualified for both the Minnesota State Meet and the Junior Olympics.

Men’s Alpine Skiing
Captain Jody Centauro ’08 and Josh Kernan ’10 both return to the men’s alpine ski team after participating in the NCAA Skiing Championships last year. Centauro placed 22nd in the slalom and 24th in the giant slalom at the national meet, and Kernan took 20th in the slalom and 25th in the giant slalom. The Mules will have a new head coach in Danny Noyes ’02.

Women’s Alpine Skiing
The women’s alpine team got a boost last year from first-year skiers Dana Breakstone ’10, Emily Colin ’10, and Laura Littman ’10. All three returning skiers had top-20 performances at the EISA meets. Breakstone and Colin are captains. Brett Wagenheim ’08 and Julia Coffin Peck ’09 also had solid finishes last year.

Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team will undoubtedly have the youngest team in the NESCAC this season. The Mules have nine first-year players, two sophomores, and one senior on the roster.

Co-captain Katie McCabe ’08 earned All-State second-team honors last year and heads into her final season with 858 points and 492 rebounds. Co-captain Alison Cappelloni ’10 was the only first-year player in the NESCAC to show up in four of the eight individual statistical categories kept by the league. She was fourth in blocked shots per game (1.70, 39 total), sixth in 3-point field goal percentage (.333), 15th in scoring (11.0), and 15th in rebounding (6.3). Bethany Bartley ’10 returns at forward.

Men’s Basketball
Mark Gaudet ’08, injured for most of the second half of the season, Adam Choice ’10, and Mac Simpson ’09 all return to the men’s basketball team this year. Gaudet and Choice were starters last year, and Simpson has accumulated more than 20 starts in two seasons.

Gaudet, who will be captain, is one of the top three-point-goal and free-throw shooters in Division III. He led the NESCAC as a sophomore in three-point shooting and was sixth last year at 43 percent. Gaudet shot 37-for-39 from the foul line (95 percent), but did not qualify for league honors because of too few attempts.

Choice continued to get stronger throughout his first season, averaging nine points and about six rebounds per game. He was among the top 12 in the conference in rebounding and steals. Returning as juniors, Artie Cutrone ’09 and Nick Planeta ’09 both were in last year’s rotation.

Women’s Swimming and Diving
Women’s swimming and diving has high expectations this year after finishing 13th at the NCAA Division III Championships, going 7-2 in dual meets, and winning the CBB title for the fourth straight year.

All-American Kelly Norsworthy ’08 won three NESCAC titles—in the 50-, 100-, and 200-meter breaststroke. She then helped the Mules place 13th at nationals by taking fourth in the 100 breaststroke and 10th in the 200 breaststroke.

Kelsey Potdevin ’09 took second in the 50 backstroke at the NESCAC meet. Kristi Boman ’08, Maddie Given ’08, and Samantha Rose ’08 will be captains this season.

Men’s Swimming and Diving
Men’s swimming and diving went 6-2 last year in dual meets and won a third straight CBB title, but they lost All-American Jabez Dewey ’07 to graduation.

Evan Mullin ’08 and Mike Finnerty ’08 will be captains. Mullin holds the school record in the 500 freestyle and is strong in the 100 and 200 free. Finnerty will score points in the backstroke races, and Kevin Smith ’10 set a school record in the 1,000 meters last year in his first season at Colby.

The Mules set three school records in relay races last year—in the 200 medley, 400 medley, and 200 freestyle. A few of the swimmers graduated, but Andrew Peterson ’08, Sam Wampler ’09, Mullin, and Ben Gross ’10 all return.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Women’s track and field heads into the 2008 indoor season this winter with more than 20 first-year athletes joining the roster to create one of the largest squads in recent years. All-American Anna King ’08 returns in the 5,000-meter run. Liz Petit ’08 (mid-distance), Brianna Kondrat ’09 (throws), Jessie Young ’08 (throws), and Erin Beasley ’09 (sprints) should also score points for the Mules.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field
Men’s track and field heads into the 2008 indoor season with plenty of middle distance runners led by Bob Glotfelty ’08 and Dan Moss ’08. Glotfelty won a State of Maine title in the 1,000-meter run last year, and Moss was second in the state in the 800 meters. Moss also finished ninth in the 800-meter run at the New England Division III Championship meet, and Glotfelty took sixth in the 1,000 meters at the ECAC meet.

Women’s Squash
Ranked 14th nationally last year, the women’s squash team retains its top six singles players. Samantha Smith ’10 played the first position as a first-year student last season. Position player Stacy Petro ’08 is this year’s captain.

Men’s Squash
The men’s squash team ranked 24th in the nation last year and retains the top two singles players. Jake Leiby ’09 played the first position for the second straight year, and Ryan Maher ’08 was in the second spot. Leiby was the only male or female Colby Mule to play at the individual singles championships. Maher is the new team captain.
