Colby Swimming and Diving History

Men's Swimming and Diving
The men's swimming program started during the 1970-71 academic year.

Current head coach Tom Burton has seen many swimmers set school and NESCAC records in the past five years. Jonathan Eck '03 graduated with school records in the 50 breaststroke (26.47), 100 breaststroke (56.98), 200 breaststroke (2:06.07), and 200 individual medley (1:54.56).

Geoff Herrick '98 and Jeff McCloskey '00 each own four school records also. Herrick hold records in the 50 butterfly (23.06), 100 butterfly (50.44), 200 butterfly (1:52.32), and 200 freestyle (1:42.63). McCloskey's records stand in the 100 individual medley (54.12), 50 backstroke (24.96), 100 backstroke (52.66), and 200 backstroke (1:54.21).

Herrick, Stephen Feldman '01, and Eck all earned All-America honors for finishes in the top eight at the national meet.

Current swimmer Jabez Dewey '07 has rewritten the backstroke records and earned an All-American honor in 2006.

Women's Swimming and Diving
Current head coach Tom Burton's swimmers set numerous school records and several NESCAC records in the past five years.

Sally White '91, though, remains one of the top swimmers in program history despite all the new school records. White earned All-America honors by finishing second in the 400 individual medley, fifth in the 500 freestyle, and sixth in the mile at the 1988-89 NCAA Championships. White still holds school records in the 400 individual medley (4:35.16), the 200 freestyle (1:55.58), the 500 freestyle (5:01.31), the 1,000 freestyle (10:29.59), and the 1,650 freestyle (17:19.55).

Laura Miller '05 became the first women's swimmer since White to earn All-America honors when she placed second in the butterfly in the 2004 meet. Current swimmer Kelly Norsworthy '08 will likely go down in the record books as the most decorated swimmer in Colby history. She already owns five individual All-America honors for top eight finishes including two second-place finishes at the 2006 meet.

Colby's 2005 team was the best in school history, placing eighth at the NCAA meet.

Women's swimming was established as a varsity sport in 1979.
