Mayflower Hill remains a beehive of building activity, and there's no sign of the pace slowing even as new facilities come online. Roberts dining hall opened in February and is so popular that students are tolerating crowds to eat there. The Diamond Building, an impressive 53,000-square-foot academic building next to Lunder House, is scheduled to open in February 2007. An expansion and renovation of Cotter Union with the addition of the Pulver Pavilion is set for groundbreaking next month.

Understanding the role China plays and will play in the world requires an understanding and appreciation of China's cultural legacy. China: Traditions and Transitions, this year's Alumni College, July 23-27, will acquaint participants with significant aspects of China's rich heritage, including its religious, philosophical, military, political, artistic, economic, and literary traditions. Colby's faculty will trace these threads of tradition as they are woven into the fabric of China's current transition and its future challenges and promise. Beyond the classroom, participants will explore ancient Chinese art using the extraordinary collections in the museum of art, the beauty of Tai Chi, and contemporary Chinese cinema.
The Schair-Swenson-Watson Alumni Center (SSWAC) officially was named a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building and received silver certification for enhanced environmental initiatives. The LEED plaque mounted in the lobby was presented in recognition of environmental leadership and achievement in the design and construction of the new alumni center, which uses geothermal wells for heating and cooling and was built with extensive use of recycled construction materials. The LEED program, administered by the U.S. Green Building Council, sets standards for green building design, emphasizing cutting-edge strategies for site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

Emilia Tjernstrom '06 was named a 2006-07 Thomas J. Watson Fellow and will receive $25,000 for independent exploration and travel, as long as it's outside of the U.S. or her native Sweden. Her proposal, "Nomad's Land: Development, Conservation and Nomads," will take her to Mali, Mauritania, Argentina, and Mongolia to survey herders caught between development and conservation.

On March 16, 86 guests attended the Washington, D.C., campaign event, where trustee
Rob Rudnick '69 served as host and emcee. "When I was a student at Colby, I didn't really understand what it takes to run a college," Rob said. "I thought you could take some land, put up some buildings, hand out Frisbees . . ." The event began a new series of campaign events around the country to communicate that there's more to running a college than Rob first thought.
According to alumni surveys and feedback that editor
Gerry Boyle '78 gets,
Colby magazine is highly regarded by many of its more than 27,000 recipients. Now the magazine staff has earned a bit of professional validation as well. At the District I CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education) conference in Montreal, Feb. 11-14, Colby won the gold medal for "Best Writing of a Magazine." Congratulations to Gerry and news editor
Ruth Jacobs (communications), alumni-at-large editor
Bob Gillespie (who thought he retired last year but continues to contribute to the magazine), and all who contribute to each issue.
