Dedicating the Diamond

The Diamond Building, a 53,500-square-foot academic building for social sciences and interdisciplinary studies, is being dedicated with events on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week. Besides classrooms and faculty offices, the facility includes the Ostrove Auditorium, a GIS lab, offices and workspace for student research teams, and headquarters for the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement. On Monday the Morning Sentinel previewed the dedication, which includes panel discussions each of the three days. Details about the building are online.

Colby from the Inside
Why is coming home from abroad often more disorienting than adjusting to an alien culture? How did four students get pegged as potential terrorists in D.C. over spring break? How many meals and cups of coffee has one blogger had with his professors at Colby? It's all in stories told by students, and it's all online. InsideColby is a Web site for prospective students launched April 5 with stories, photos, podcasts, blogs, and more. Current Colby students produce all the content, much of which is included in a printed magazine distributed on campus and mailed to high schoolers interested in Colby. Check it out -- it really is a glimpse inside Colby

Linkin’ Lincoln
The jury of internationally renowned Civil War historians for the 2007 Lincoln Prize will include Colby's Gibson Professor of History, Elizabeth Leonard. The jury selects three finalists for the largest book prize for American history, awarded by the Lincoln and Soldiers Institute at Gettysburg College. Coincidentally, last year's prize went to Doris Kearns Goodwin ’64 for Team of Rivals. ... Look for both Colby women on the small screen: Leonard is featured on The History Channel program "Full Metal Corset: Secret Soldiers of the Civil War"; Goodwin earns guffaws on The Daily Show with John Stewart.

Osborne Honored in Boston
This year's field hockey team earned the National Field Hockey Coaches Association academic team award for having a composite GPA of 3.0 or higher, and eight players were named to the NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad (http://www.colby.edu/athletics_cs/field_hockey/). ... Men's ice hockey forward Greg Osborne ’07, the NESCAC Player of the Year, also received the Joe Concannon Award from the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston, honoring him as New England's best American-born Division II-III hockey player (http://www.colby.edu/athletics_cs/mens_hockey/). ... Last month's OOTB reported a possible NCAA Division III split as a fait accompli. Not so. Details at http://www.colby.edu/news.

Reunion 2007
Want to learn a new skill? Or hear how a 67-year-old with a heart condition conquered Mt. Kilimanjaro? Reunion 2007 is not just about meeting old classmates. Speakers from the classes of 1957 to 1992 will offer sessions on topics ranging from Professional Clowning Around and Psychic Susan Visits the World Beyond to Nutrition: Are You Digging Your Grave With Your Fork? and Slick Spin: How Publicists Shape Today's News. Even if your class year doesn't end in a 2 or 7, you are welcome to attend. Register by May 4 and your name will be entered into an early-bird registration drawing to receive a refund for the entire cost of your weekend. Register online or find more information, the schedule of events, and a list of who's planning to attend at http://www.colby.edu/reunion.

Two Peace Projects
Three Colby students have been awarded $10,000 grants for the summer of 2007 by the Kathryn Wasserman Davis 100 Projects for Peace program. Melyn Heckelman ’08 and Victoria Yuan ’07 will implement a sex-education program for students in Chengdu, China. Christine Avena ’08 will focus on conservation efforts in Ecuador that replace introduced species like cows with native alpacas and llamas. Read more about the projects.

ColbyTunes
Colby's streaming radio is now easier to find than ever. WMHB 89.7 FM has been added to the iTunes radio library, the station announced March 20. In iTunes under radio, users can simply click on "alternative" or "eclectic" and scroll down the list of stations. WMHB also can be heard through its Web site. A recent student-produced podcast about the station and what makes it unique is online -- episode 14.
