A Newsletter for Alumni

Charting Their Course
Members of the Class of 2011 arrived Tuesday to start their Mayflower Hill experience, with 468 first-years and nine transfers expected. Orientation was overhauled to focus more on intellectual and academic life, and this year began with alumni and faculty panels talking about "Meaningful Work at Colby and Beyond." COOT trips are still a big part of the program; they headed out Thursday morning, and some will be visited by alumni offering a special welcome to the incoming students. The year is underway, with the first day of classes for new and returning students on September 5.

First Annual Career Networking and Leadership Weekend
One question on campus this fall: "What do I do with a B.A. in . . .?" The Alumni Council, in conjunction with the faculty and the offices of Career Services, Admissions, and College Relations, is inviting alumni/ae and students to explore that very question at the First Annual Career Networking and Leadership Weekend, September 28-29. Highlights of the weekend include speed networking, mock interviews, and a Savvy Socializing Reception featuring tips on how to dress for success and entertainment by the Colby Eight. For a full schedule of events, visit www.colby.edu/leadershipweekend

Hill ’n’ the Ville
Colby students and Waterville Main Street have organized a Colby/Waterville festival geared for college students and scheduled September 15. Dubbed "Hill 'n' the Ville," the event runs from noon to 7 p.m. and includes live music and other entertainment, food, games, and walking tours of downtown. The Waterville Main Street organization's announcement of the event is online.

Oak Fellow From Colombia
Nancy Sanchez, an activist working to address human rights abuses in Putumayo, Colombia, is the 2007 Oak Human Rights Fellow. Sanchez documents and denounces political violence and supports efforts of women, indigenous people, and Afro-Colombians to create new networks and autonomous communities. Her work has played a critical role in Colombia and in policy debates in the United States. She will be on campus for the fall semester continuing her research, working with students, and organizing programs around her interest. For more on the program and the fellow, see www.colby.edu/oak.

Waste Not . . .
When Colby renovated Roberts dining hall, sustainability was a major factor, as in all new construction and renovation projects on Mayflower Hill. Besides using recycled materials in the facility, Dining Services now prepares food on demand, creating less pre-consumer waste. Smaller trays help to keep students from taking more food than they can eat. Durable furniture means less frequent replacement, saving money and materials. The Chronicle of Higher Education took note of these and other initiatives.

Honor Society Honors
First Stacey Dubois ’08 was accepted as a member of Psi Chi, the national psychology honor society. Then, this summer, she won first place in the Psi Chi J.P. Guilford Undergraduate Research Award Competition. Her paper, "Stereotype Threat Affects False Memory Susceptibility in Younger and Older Adults," was named overall best research paper. In July she presented the research, from her junior year, at the Society for Applied Research in Memory and Cognition meeting at Bates

Colby Athletics, Then and Now
Baseball legend John “Colby Jack” Coombs, who played for the College before the Mules were mules, is featured in a museum exhibit in his hometown—Kennebunk, Maine. Soon after he graduated, in 1906, Coombs won a 24-inning game as a rookie for the Philadelphia Athletics. Featured on sports pages across the country in a photo from his Colby days, he got the nickname, which stuck. Today's baseball Mules play on Coombs Field. The exhibit about Coombs and his nephew runs through December at the Brick Store Museum. Info about current Colby Mules, including season outlooks for fall sports and scores as they come in, is online.

Rowing the World
Margaret Duggan ’06 was named to the U.S. National Rowing Team and is currently competing in the 2007 FISA World Rowing Championships in Munich. On Thursday her lightweight quad scull made the finals by placing second to China in a semifinal heat. Duggan rows for the New York Athletic Club. Thursday results, including Duggan's boat, are online.
