Just a few short hours after mortarboards flew on the quad May 27, the Commencement Web site had audio and video online from each section of Sunday's ceremony. It's all still there. Visit
the commencement site to watch Class Speaker
Kate Braemer '07 assemble her dovetailed box, to read a transcript of the 2007 baccalaureate address by President
Bro Adams, and to hear
Jim Terhune (vice president and dean of students) say "Jayadev Vadakkanmarveettil" (and the names of 466 other graduating seniors).
News of the gift of the Lunder Collection to the Colby College Museum of Art rippled through the art world and beyond this spring, with coverage in the New York Times and other national and international media. A press coverage section includes a link to video from New England Cable News, which sent a reporter to tour the galleries with Sharon Corwin, the museum's Carolyn Muzzy Director and chief curator. Watch online as Corwin shows off some of the Lunder Collection artwork.
In June Professor Jim Fleming (science, technology, and society) and the American Meteorological Society (AMS) received the Society of National Association Publishers' top award—the gold—for best writing, content, design, photos, and packaging of a new book. Fleming's latest book, The Callendar Effect, about the scientist who established the carbon dioxide theory of climate change, also won the 2006 Atmospheric Science Librarians International Choice Award at the AMS meeting last winter. Info on the book is online. See also Fleming's Wilson Quarterly article about would-be climate engineers.
When Ian London '07 of Topsham, Maine, set a new Colby record for the 1500 meters at the Open New England Championships in May, his 3:50.6 time toppled a mark that stood for 26 years. That must make Kelly Dodge '83 (major gifts) feel old, since it was Dodge's record that fell. Despite his speed, London cut it close getting to Commencement. He finished 10th in the NCAA national finals May 26 before hustling back to campus to graduate May 27. See a Sentinel story online. Though London missed All-America status by only about a second, 15 other Colby athletes did make All-America in 2006-07. The list is online.
Linda Greenlaw '83, an English major at Colby who became a fisherman and then a best-selling nonfiction writer, has released her first work of fiction. In Slipknot (Hyperion, 2007) Greenlaw tells the story of a former Florida homicide detective who becomes a marine insurance investigator in the fictional town of Green Haven, Maine. An interview with the author is online.
Gorgeous weather on Reunion Weekend, June 7-11, contributed to record-breaking numbers of alumni returning to campus. Alums from the classes of 1935 to 2007 and their guests and children enjoyed the beautiful campus and springtime in Maine as they reconnected with their classmates. Registration, the Parade of Classes, and Saturday evening entertainment were centered in and around the new Schair-Swenson-Watson Alumni Center and the recently dedicated Diamond Building. Photos from reunion are online.
You've heard it before: every gift counts, no matter what size. And in these final two days of Colby's Alumni Fund year, that's more apparent than ever. Our goals are ambitious but within reach, so we're reaching out one last time to those who haven't given yet this year. Your donation will help Colby remain accessible to bright and capable students and remain competitive among its peers. Make your donation online or call 800-311-3678. Help Colby to help the students who help make the world a better place.
After 13 years at Colby, including the last 10 as director of alumni relations, Margaret Felton Viens '77 has stepped down. Margaret built a strong alumni relations program into a role model for colleges across the nation. As we search for candidates to fill the director of alumni and donor relations position, we welcome suggestions from alumni. A letter from Vice President for College Relations Richard Ammons seeking alumni input is online, as is the position description. E-mail your comments to vpcr@colby.edu.
