A page-one Inauguration Day article in the
Wall Street Journal highlighted the work of
Emmett Beliveau '99, executive director of the Presidential Inaugural Committee. It also broke the news that Beliveau will be director of advance for President Obama—a title he also held in the Obama campaign. See more on Beliveau in
Colby magazine and the
Lewiston Sun-Journal.

How's this for pressure on the basketball court? You're facing Colby's biggest rival, the coach's alma mater, which beat you in the season opener. You're down 21-13. And, by the way, your coach's 600th career victory is on the line. That was the situation in the first half as Dick Whitmore's men's basketball team took on Bowdoin Jan. 17.
To give the ending away, Whitmore became just the seventh coach in NCAA Div. III history to record 600 wins. See details of the drama and links to news coverage.
For several years Colby-Bates-Hamilton travel-study trips have taken small groups of alumni and parents, along with a faculty guide, to destinations around the globe. Now a special trip to Peru for young alumni up to 15 years out will include a service component. In addition to visiting Incan ruins, including Machu Picchu, and the colonial town of Cusco, travelers will visit Peruvian Hearts, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the lives of children living in poverty. The travelers will help serve lunch to Peruvian children and will spend play time with them. Find out more about this trip and others.
Thirty-eight first-year students who spent the fall semester studying in Dijon, France, or Salamanca, Spain, have joined their class at Colby. Spending the first semester away from most of their classmates can cause anxiety about the transition to Mayflower Hill, but the student-initiated Link Program offers support. First-year student leaders invite the new arrivals to dinner, introduce them to other classmates, and include them in activities. They also provide support to the midyear arrivals while they are abroad. Read more.
Forty-seven years after Colby pioneered it, the Jan Plan is still going strong, with scores of courses on and off campus, internships, and research underway. A new Jan Plan Web site has details, including a dozen links to photos, journals, and descriptions of courses and activities. In 1961-62 Colby was the first college to add the much-copied Jan Plan term to a semester schedule; Eckerd College in Florida, founded a year earlier, had a short winter term when it opened.
A four-day international conference titled Climate Change Science, Environmental Challenges, and Cultural Anxiety: Historical and Social Perspectives is planned on campus this spring, underwritten by a $25,000 grant from the National Science Foundation awarded to Professor of Science, Technology, and Society Jim Fleming. NSF grants awarded to Colby faculty members in the fall went to Phil Brown (economics), Paul Josephson (history), and Whitney King (chemistry).
Simple math suggests that the sum of the parts cannot be more than the whole, but making a gift to Colby with an annuity challenges that thinking. In volatile economic times, more donors are turning to annuities to support Colby while enjoying fixed annual payments for life—payments backed by the College’s assets and history of fiscal prudence. Donors enjoy an immediate tax deduction and the satisfaction of knowing their gifts will make a difference to future students. Interested? Act quickly—annuity rates from many charitable organizations go down Feb. 1, but Colby is extending current (higher) rates through March.
