First presented in 1988, this award is presented periodically (but not necessarily annually) to an alumnus/a who has demonstrated exceptional distinction in the classroom. The recipient should be recognized by peers and students as an outstanding teacher or professor who has shown those qualities that most encourage students to learn and that inspire them to continue learning. The award is presented at the recipient's workplace, if possible, with colleagues and students during National Education Week in the fall. The recipient is selected by the Awards Committee of the Alumni Council, with ratification by the Executive Committee. Nominations come to the committee from the alumni body at large via a nomination form in Colby magazine and from the development and alumni relations staff. The Office of Alumni Relations prepares background information on all candidates for the committee. Preliminary review of candidates is made at the fall and January meetings, and final selection is made at the June meeting of the committee. The award is a Colby captain's chair.
