A center for the arts and humanities at Colby will launch this fall thanks in part to a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The center will support the curriculum, lectures, events, and interdisciplinary collaboration emphasizing the humanities, which provide a critical foundation for communication, creative expression, and understanding the complexity of human experience. So far it's the most popular post ever on Colby's Facebook page, and the Colby Fund office hopes it will remind those who haven't already given this year to help keep the magic alive for current and future Colby students by contributing this week.

Seven seniors received grants from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program to spend the coming academic year in five foreign countries. All seven received fellowships to be English Teaching Assistants. Read more.

Maine and New York -- two vastly different places, both with unique appeal -- are the subject of an upcoming exhibit (July 14-Dec. 30) at the Colby College Museum of Art. Alex Katz has lived and painted in both places for decades. Now the museum with the world's largest collection of Katz's work offers an exhibit that will please both longtime fans and those who have yet to experience the large-scale paintings that make Katz one of the art world's brightest stars. Why do colleges give honorary degrees? MPBN's Maine Things Considered asked climate scientist Ralph Cicerone, Sc.D '12, who said, "If somebody asks me for the name of a top liberal arts college in the eastern United States," Colby is now on the list. "I've now seen how they're run and what their physical plants are, what their students are doing," he said. "It makes an impression." Listen.
A Science magazine article cowritten by Michael Stephens '13 describes megablooms of marine phytoplankton in the Arctic that surprised and alarmed him and fellow scientists who made the discovery. Stephens made the scientific expedition with Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences last summer, and the story was picked up by CNN June 11.
After winning his second Division III NCAA national championship this year -- this time in the 100-meter dash in California -- environmental studies major Dominique Kone '13 headed to Virginia for an internship on parasite research. The Morning Sentinel covered Kone's achievement.
In 2012-13 Colby will celebrate 200 years of history with a variety of events, celebrations, and observances on campus and around the country. A preview calendar of the bicentennial lecture series keynotes is now online, and a bicentennial website will launch late this summer.
