Commencement 2011 is Sunday
Rajiv ShahThe head of USAID, Administrator Rajiv Shah, will deliver the address, and Aleah Starr '11 of Montpelier, Vt., is the senior class speaker for Colby's 190th commencement Sunday at 10 a.m. This year's commencement will be webcast on Facebook as well as Colby’s commencement page, with live chat capability both places.

Contact Zone, the Video
Gandhi Ashram SchoolAn eight-minute video by Tarini Manchanda '09 released this spring goes a long way toward capturing the magic of the Contact Zone Jan Plan at the Gandhi Ashram School in Kalimpong, India. The Contact Zone explores the interchange and tension among language, history, tradition, and authority in colonial and postcolonial cultures, and students often call it a magical experience.

Women's Lacrosse in National Sweet Sixteen
Casey Thomas '11On May 14 at the NCAA Div. III national tournament, the eighth-ranked women's lacrosse team faced number-three Hamilton, the team that eliminated Colby a year earlier. Trailing 4-0 in the first half, the Mules found their stride, and Tess Petesch '13 broke a 5-5 tie with 13 seconds remaining in the game to seal victory. The come-from-behind win put the team into the Sweet Sixteen for the second year, but Cortland State would prove too much the next day. Details »

What Jeronimo Learned
Jeronimo Maradiaga '09The story of Jeronimo Maradiaga '09 getting to and through Colby earned Gerry Boyle '78 a national gold medal for college and university magazine features. Now the saga continues. Maradiaga won a Watson Fellowship to explore the meaning of success in the world's least affluent communities, and Boyle writes about the sometimes-traumatic experiences that transformed the intrepid traveler. Schwalm '99 Makes Hall-of-Fame Photo
Pro Football Hall of Fame photo of the yearMary Schwalm '99 is the first woman to win photo-of-the-year honors in the 43 years of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Photo Contest. Her shot from the Dec. 19 Patriots-Packers game shows Aaron Hernandez high-stepping into the end zone. Schwalm told her paper, the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune, how the image was made. More »
