Alum's Van Gogh Bio Climbs Bestseller List
Vincent Van GoghSteven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith '73, who won the 1990 Pulitzer for biography with Jackson Pollock: An American Saga, are back on the bestseller lists with Van Gogh: The Life (Random House). The partners made headlines for their hypothesis that van Gogh's death was not suicide. Among many other venues, the authors appeared on 60 Minutes and the Diane Rehm Show, and the book was reviewed in the New York Times in October.

Students Implement Fresh Idea
With start-up capital from the Colby Entrepreneurial Alliance, Danny Garin '13, Marcus Josefsson '13, and Noah VanValkenburg '13 started My Fresh Maine, a company that connects Maine farmers and artisans directly to consumers.

Amidst Student Debt Crisis, Colby Reaffirms: "No Loans"
As President Obama tackled the student debt crisis in October, Colby reaffirmed its commitment to replacing student loans with grants. The program, begun in 2008, makes it possible for students with financial need to graduate debt free, and it endures after some other colleges' "no-loans" programs quietly disappeared. It is just one of several Colby programs assuring access and affordability to qualified students, regardless of their ability to pay.

Financially Savvy Alums Optimistic
Despite the challenging economy, there is reason for optimism, according to three alumni influential in the financial sector. Bob Diamond '73, P'12, Tom Riley '79, and Eric Rosengren '79, P'12, participated in an Oct. 20 campus panel that explored the economic crisis and its possible solutions. Earlier this month, Diamond delivered the inaugural BBC Today Business Lecture and was interviewed on the BBC Today, one of his most in-depth interviews since becoming chief executive at Barclays.
  Sustainability Report Highlights Green Initiatives
Colby's Sustainability Report 2010-11 samples green initiatives, starting with the new biomass heating plan and ending with charts showing a 45-percent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions since 2002. The report replaces and expands on annual reports from the Environmental Advisory Group published in recent years.

A LEED Gold and Biomass on Track
Goddard-Hodgkins HallGoddard-Hodgkins received LEED Gold certification following 2010 renovation work. The 53-year-old residence hall, formerly the ATO fraternity house, is the sixth on campus with LEED certification. More »
Colby's new biomass heating plant, which will burn low-grade forest waste and debris from sustainable forest operations within a 50-mile radius, is expected to achieve at least a LEED Silver rating. By early December both new boilers are scheduled to be producing steam for the campus. More »

Karen Heck '74 Elected Mayor
In a three-way race for mayor of Waterville, Karen Heck '74, running as an independent, won with 54 percent of the vote Nov. 8. She takes office Jan. 3, the Morning Sentinel reports. A senior program officer for the Bingham Program and cofounder of Hardy Girls Healthy Women, Heck is the sixth Colby grad, and the first alumna, elected to the office this century.
