Course Description

This course presents a general historical survey of the visual culture of China¡Xfrom the Neolithic to the 20th century¡Xwithin its religious, political, social, and economic contexts.  Major questions include: How are beliefs encoded in the content and style of works of art?  What relationship did artists have with the patrons or consumers of artwork?  What materials did Chinese artists use, and why?  How do different physical environments (such as the tomb, the temple, the court, the studio, the home, and the marketplace) affect the production and meaning of art?  What limitations restrict our interpretation of Chinese art?

 Papers, Quizzes, and Exams
One short paper on assigned topic. You will have a choice of two: the first due in week 4, or the second due in week 10. 20% of the final grade.

Weekly quizzes will be held each Thursday at the beginning of class.  The quizzes will be in two formats: slide identification OR short essay based upon a slide comparison.  I will announce the format of each week¡¦s quiz at Tuesday¡¦s class session.  No make-up quizzes will be held, nor will extra time be granted for students arriving late.  The 10 quizzes will count for 30% of the final grade (3% each).  You may drop your lowest quiz score.

This course will have two exams: a midterm on Thursday March 16 and a final on the date scheduled for this class.  The exams will include slide identifications and short essays.  Midterm: 20%; final: 20%. Final Exam will be on date scheduled for this class

Participation and Attendance
Missed classes will not only affect your quiz grades, but also this portion of the grade.  In terms of participation, quality counts more than quantity.  Worth 10% of final grade.
