About the Ink Tales Seal Chinese painters use carved seals (or chops) as signature stamps on their paintings. Collectors also imprint their seals on paintings, allowing us to see the physical traces of the hsitory of the scroll on its surface. |
Our seal contains four characters: the two on the right read shuimo 水墨 or "ink"; the two on the left read gushi 故事 or "tales." Thus, the seal contains the title of this exhibition. It was designed by Alyssa Lee (Colby '08), a student participant in the seminar and summer research assistant. You can make your own seal by using a gum eraser and a toothpick or pen. Make sure to carve the letters backwards because when you print your seal, you will see the mirror image of what you have carved. |
