AS151 Chapter 23 Study Guide

Coverage of Topics and Study Notes:

Like Chapter 22, Chapter 23 is well written but long. Perhaps the description of our Milky Way Galaxy seems confusing in some places. The reasons for the confusion stem from the historical difficulty of studying our own galaxy from within it.

We will not cover the history in as much detail at the text does, expecially in the case of the Shapley-Curtis Debate.  Otherwise, we'll try to hit the high points of every part of the chapter.  Remember to use your notes as the guide to what's important for the quiz.

Chapter Review:

Review and Discussion:  All good!

Conceptual Self-Test: True of False/Multiple Choice:  All great except number 2, which is picky.  It's false because Cepheid Variables are supergiants instead of giants and RR Lyrae stars aren't red.  But we think of post-main sequence stars as red giants, so red giants is a plausable off-the-top-of-your-head answer. Number 15 should be answered in terms of the

visible part of the Galaxy, not the larger Dark Matter halo-like distribution.

Problems: Skip them all.
