In 2007, we will use about one class for a summary of the very most important aspects of telescopes. You are only responsible for the topics mentioned specifically in class.
Reading: Sections 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 and the first part of 5.4 contain coverage of the topics covered in class.
Telescopes I have used that are shown in the figures : NASA Infrared Telescope in Figure 5.13, VLA Interferometer in Fig. 4.27, and balloon borne infrared telescope in Fig. 5.32a. Also, data from Infrared Astronomy Satellite, Infrared Space Observatory, and Spitzer Space Telescope (Fig 5.32b) are in the public domain, and I'm using data from them now. I am working in a collaboration that used Gemini North (Figure 5.13) in July, 2006, although I didn't make the observations myself.
The text is very well done, but much more detailed than appropriate for the survey of astronomy in AS 151. If you're interested, it's an awesome description of modern
telescopes on the ground and in space.
