WATERVILLE, Maine — Brianne Wheeler made 20 of her 40 saves in the third period and Megan Fortier had three assists as the Colby College women's hockey team took a 4-1 win over Williams College on Friday night at Alfond Rink.
The Mules improve to 6-9 overall and 2-7 in New England Small College Athletic Conference play. Williams falls to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in league play. The two teams will meet again Saturday at 3 p.m. at Alfond Rink.
Wheeler was spectacular in the final period after the Mules spent most of the opening 10 minutes of play with players in the penalty box. Williams had a two-player advantage at one point for 39 seconds. However, her best stop of the game may have come with 3:56 left to play when she drove across the crease to knock away a shot by Sam Cutts.
The Mules took a 2-1 lead into the third period and sealed the victory when Meredith Reynolds tipped in a shot with just 2:01 to play. Natalie Fischer had the initial shot from the point that was deflected by Fortier and Reynolds deflected her deflection. Colby added a fourth goal when Lauren Guarente tallied with 46.6 seconds to play into an empty net. Fortier passed the puck from the left side and Guarente was all alone in front.
The two teams traded goals in the second period after playing to a 0-0 tie after one. Katie Tang scored her first collegiate goal when she ripped a high shot past Williams goalie Rachel Nguyen at 7:38.
Williams tied the game at 1-1 at 12:29 when Cristina Bravi scored her fourth goal of the season when her shot from the right side hit the left post and went in. Sam Weinstein and Gabrielle Vukasin set her up on the power play.
Kathy Shei scored her first goal of the season just two minutes later for the game-winning score. Shei sneaked in on the right side and beat Nguyen with another high shot. Samantha Slotnick and Fortier had assists on the play.
Nguyen had 27 saves and allowed three goals for Williams.
