Women's basketball drops first game of season
SALEM, Mass. --
Despite holding Salem State to just 20 points in the first half, the 23rd-ranked Colby College women's basketball team fell for the first time this season with a 55-54 loss to the Vikings in the title game of the Salem State Tournament on Monday.
Tournament MVP Gillian Almeida had 13 points and eight rebounds for Salem State (7-2).
Sarah Walsh had 18 points and Bianca Belcher had 15 points and four assists for Colby (6-1). Wendy Bonner added six points and 11 rebounds for the Mules.
Colby led 25-20 at halftime, but shot just 32 percent from the field in the second half and 34 percent for the game. The Mules hurt their own cause with a 6-for-13 effort from the foul line.
Colby will play host to Southern Maine next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
