Colby field hockey clinches NESCAC tourney bid
MEDFORD, Mass. --
The Colby College field hockey team will not get much chance to celebrate clinching a New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament bid after Saturday's 3-2 victory over Tufts University in a game that went to penalty strokes.
The Mules (10-4, 5-4), winners of five straight games, clinched the fifth seed in the NESCAC Tournament and will play at fourth-seeded Wesleyan University in a quarterfinal game Sunday at 1 p.m.
The contest was decided with two rounds of penalty strokes after the teams tied 2-2 after regulation and then 2-2 in the first penalty stroke round. Sophomore Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) and first-year midfielder Nikki Stadelman (North Allegheny/East Falmouth, Mass.) had scores for Colby in the first round of penalty strokes.
Colby changed up its shooting lineup in the second round of penalty strokes, moving Stadelman to the first shooter and sophomore Michaelyn Bortolotti (Hanover/Hanover, Mass.) to the fifth spot. The move paid off as Stadelman and Bonner, the third shooter, scored again and Bortolotti also tallied.
Kim Betz (Greenwich Academy/Greenwich, Conn.) scored in the first half off an assist from Stadelman to help Colby tie the game 1-1 at halftime. Betz also got the other goal for the Mules.
Senior goaltender Carrie Morin (Cony/Augusta, Maine) made five saves for Colby.
