Colby baseball opens season with split
FORT MYERS, Fla. --
Dan Deacon (Moses Brown/Rumford, R.I.) pitched a three-hit shutout for the Colby College baseball team in a 7-0 victory over Coe College in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday.
The Mules, who had their scheduled opener in Florida against Rio Grande canceled on Saturday because of rain, lost 6-2 in the opener to Coe.
Matt Gibson (Lakeview/Courtland, Ohio) had two hits and two runs for Colby in the nightcap. B.L. Lippert (Cony/Augusta, Maine) also had two hits and Brandon Royce (Cony/Augusta, Maine) doubled.
In the opener, Nick Miller (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) had three hits to pace the Mules (1-1). Tyler Hales (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) had two hits in his collegiate debut and Rodney Ames (New Hampton/Cotuit, Mass.) doubled.
