Bates comeback burns Colby baseball

WATERVILLE, Maine --

The Bates College baseball team scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game and added two more runs in the 10th inning to pull out an 8-6 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division play Friday at Coombs Field.

Bates (4-9, 1-3 NESCAC East) and Colby (6-10-1, 0-5) will play two games Saturday at noon in Lewiston.

Charles Engasser (Chanhassen, Minn.) singled and scored for Bates in both the ninth and 10th innings. John O'Neill (Cumberland, R.I.) also singled in both the ninth and 10th innings. O'Neill scored in the ninth for the Bobcats and Rich Blalock (Portsmouth, N.H.), pinch-running for O'Neill, had a run in the 10th.

Jeff Kowaleski (Marshfield, Mass.) had three hits for Bates.

Jared Cushman (Cony/Augusta, Maine) went 3-for-4 with three runs and three stolen bases for Colby. Tyler Hales (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) also had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI.

Bates' John Ribas (Shelton, Conn.) pitched the final two innings for the win.
