Tufts baseball takes two from Mules
WATERVILLE, Maine --
Jon Lee (Manhasset Hills, N.Y.) and Randy Newsom (Cincinnati, Ohio) each pitched complete games to power Tufts University to a doubleheader sweep of Colby College in East Division play in the New England Small College Athletic Conference on Saturday.
Lee moved to 8-2 this season with a 5-4 victory in the opener. Newsom is 4-1 after taking an 11-5 win in the nightcap.
Colby (7-14-1, 1-9 NESCAC East) tied the first game at 4-4 with four runs in the fourth inning, but Tufts (18-8, 9-3) got the eventual game-winning run on an RBI double by Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, Md.) in the top of the fifth inning.
Jon McBride (Billerica, Mass.) doubled twice in the first game and Frank Dinucci (Wilton, Conn.) had three hits for the Jumbos.
B.L. Lippert (Augusta, Maine) went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases for Colby. Jay Johnson (Norwood, Mass.) also had two hits. Dan Deacon (Rumford, R.I.) pitched a complete game for the Mules.
Evan Zupancic (Lake Oswego, Ore.) went 3-for-4 with five runs scored in the second game for Tufts.
Brandon Royce (Augusta, Maine) had a home run and a double for Colby in the nightcap.
