UMF baseball holds off Colby, 4-3

WATERVILLE, Maine --

University of Maine-Farmington took advantage of three leadoff walks to score runs to hold on for a 4-3 victory over Colby College in non-conference baseball Wednesday.

The Mules (4-5-1) had a 9-4 advantage in hits, but left 10 runners on base as UMF junior pitcher Jeff Casavant (Biddeford, Maine) worked out of a few jams to pick up the victory.

The Beavers (1-4) scored a lone run in the second, two in the third and added the fourth run in the fifth. Colby had leadoff walks in all three innings that came around to score.

Dave Sharland (Saco, Maine) scored twice, had one hit and two walks for UMF. Tom Ventura (Saco, Maine) added a double, scored one run and walked twice.

Kevin Brunelle (Cony/Augusta, Maine) had two hits and scored one run for the Mules. B.L. Lippert (Cony/Augusta, Maine) also had two hits, including a double. Matt Gibson (Lakeview/Courtland, Ohio) and Jared Cushman (Cony/Augusta, Maine) also doubled for Colby.

The Mules had a lone run in the fourth inning and added two more in the ninth.

Colby will play host to local rival Thomas College at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
