Bonner named field hockey All-American

WATERVILLE, Maine --

Colby College sophomore Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) was honored as a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III All-American Third Team selection Monday.

Bonner finished the 2002 season with 12 goals and two assists for 26 points. She led the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in goals per game (0.80) and was tied for third in points per game (1.73). The 12 goals tied a school record and were half of Colby's goals scored this year.

"The biggest thing for Wendy from last year to this year is that she improved her individual skills," Colby head coach Brenda Beckwith said. "She became a student of the game this year and that helped improve our team as a whole."

The honors have been coming in all season for Bonner. She has already been named a NFHCA Regional All-American first-team selection and she was also named to the NESCAC first team. During the season, Bonner was a womensfieldhockey.com national honor roll pick once and earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors once.

Bonner was a big factor in Colby finishing the season at 10-5 and making the NESCAC Tournament for the second straight year. Bonner started the season at center forward, but switched to center midfield to give the Mules more help on defense.

"She doesn't have blazing speed, but she is quick all over the field," Beckwith said. "She plays what I call power field hockey."

Bonner has 19 goals and five assists for 43 career points after two seasons of field hockey.

Bonner is off to a fast start with the women's basketball team. She is averaging 14 points and 6.5 rebounds in Colby's 2-0 start to the season.
