Colby field hockey stuns Bowdoin, 4-0
WATERVILLE, MAINE --
In their final regular season home game, Colby College's four field hockey seniors all played key roles as the Mules took a stunning 4-0 victory Saturday over 15th-ranked Bowdoin College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play.
Bowdoin (10-3 overall, 6-2 NESCAC) had allowed just eight goals in its first 12 games and had eight shutout victories. This was the first time since 1989 that Colby has beaten Bowdoin.
Colby (9-4, 4-4 NESCAC) won CBB bragging rights for the year. Besides the victory over Bowdoin, the Mules also posted a 2-1 win against Bates College earlier in the season.
Seniors Carrie Morin (Cony/Augusta, Maine), Shelley Hughes (Princeton/Princeton, N.J.), Lyndsay Peters (Freeport/Freeport, Maine) and Jenn Brenneman (Kent Dover School/Denver, Colo.) all had big games. Morin had 10 saves, seven of them in the second half, and recorded her sixth shutout of the season. Brenneman had her first collegiate goal and two defensive saves, Hughes also scored her first collegiate goal, and Peters had one assist.
Hughes, starting her first game of the year on senior day, scored 9:06 into the first half off an assist from junior Sari Gilbert (Marblehead/Marblehead, Mass.). The Mules made it 2-0 when Brenneman scored off assists from Peters and Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) on a penalty corner.
Bonner made it 3-0 when she beat a defender and ripped a hard shot for the goal with 10:20 left in the game. Gilbert closed out the scoring with 5:09 remaining off an assist from junior Injoo Han (Montclair/Montclair, N.J.).
