Women's tennis handles Connecticut College
NEW LONDON, Conn. --
First singles player Sara Hughes (Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) battled back after losing the first set to take the victory in helping the Colby College women's tennis team to a 9-0 victory Sunday over Connecticut College.
The Mules (2-2) fell 9-0 to Amherst in Saturday's home opener.
Hughes lost 6-4 in the opening set to Emily Sedlis, but fought back to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-2 for the match. Hughes also teamed up with Christina Pluta (Mercer/Mercer Island, Wash.) for an 8-2 win at first doubles.
Caren Harris (Germantown/Fairview Village, Pa.) and Jenny Grace (Brewster/Darien, Conn.) won 9-7 at second doubles. Harris was a winner at first singles by 6-3, 6-2 over Laura Demoreuille.
Colby also got singles wins in straight sets from Pluta, Ginny Raho (Lincoln School/Providence, R.I.), Nikki Patel (Westminster/Avon, Conn.) and Anna Erdheim (Poly Prep Country Day/New York, N.Y.). Raho and Patel got the other victory at third doubles.
In Saturday's match against Amherst, Raho at fifth singles and Patel at the sixth spot each lost sets in tiebreakers. Hughes and Britt Palmedo (Deerfield/Ketchum, Idaho.) fell 9-7 in a tight first doubles match.
Colby plays Tuesday at Southern Maine at 4 p.m.
