Bonner, Morin lead field hockey team to big win
WATERVILLE, MAINE --
Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) scored the lone goal and Carrie Morin (Cony/Augusta, Maine) earned her first collegiate shutout as the Colby College field hockey team took a 1-0 victory over Plymouth State in a non-conference game on Thursday.
Colby improved to a 3-0 record heading into Saturday's New England Small College Athletic Conference game at Trinity College at 11 a.m. Plymouth State, which had beaten then seventh-ranked Springfield College last week, fell to 3-1.
Bonner scored the first goal of the season allowed by the Panthers. Her hard shot from near the top of the circle came off a penalty corner just 6 minutes, 27 seconds into the first half. Senior forward Lyndsay Peters (Freeport/Freeport, Maine) and junior midfielder Kelly Welch (Dennis-Yarmouth/East Dennis, Mass.) had assists. Bonner has four goals in Colby's three games.
Morin, who was celebrating her birthday on Thursday, got a nice gift with her first shutout. The senior goaltender made seven saves, including some sprawling stops late in the game on scrambles in front of the net. Morin, who is playing collegiate field hockey for the first time this year at Colby, has allowed only two goals in three games.
Plymouth State had a 10-9 advantage in shots, but many came in the final 10 minutes with the Mules protecting the lead. Colby had a 10-4 margin in penalty corners.
