Bonner leads field hockey team to victory
WATERVILLE, MAINE --
Sophomore forward Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) scored three goals to lead the Colby College field hockey team to a 4-1 non-league win over Husson College on Tuesday in the season opener for the Mules.
Bonner finished with eight shots in the game and she now has 10 career goals. She scored 17 minutes into the first half off an assist from senior captain Lyndsay Peters (Freeport/Freeport, Maine).
First-year forward Katie Gilroy (York/York, Maine) scored her first collegiate goal about four minutes after Bonner's score. Peters also had an assist on Gilroy's goal.
Bonner, after she was hauled down in front of the cage, scored on a penalty stroke with 11 seconds remaining to halftime. She then added Colby's fourth goal 2:53 into the second half off an assist from junior midfielder Injoo Han (Montclair/Montclair, N.J.).
Husson got its goal with about 15 minutes remaining from sophomore Lexi Harjula (Cushing, Maine).
Colby senior goaltender Carrie Morin (Cony/Augusta, Maine), who was playing her first collegiate field hockey game, made four saves.
The Mules will play Saturday in their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener at Bates College at 1 p.m.
