Colby field hockey beats USM in overtime

WATERVILLE, MAINE --

Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) scored 2 minutes, 38 seconds into the first overtime period to lift the Colby College field hockey team to a 2-1 non-conference win Thursday over University of Southern Maine.

After a penalty corner, Bonner picked up a loose ball on the right side and ripped a low shot past USM goalkeeper Jessie Superchi (Plymouth Regional/Campton, N.H.).

Bonner had both goals for Colby (6-4) and now has seven goals this season. The sophomore forward passed 30 career points with 14 goals and three assists for 31 points.

The Mules got off to a quick start when Bonner scored 9:40 into the game off an assist from junior forward Brittney Lazar (Notre Dame Academy/Holden, Mass.).

Southern Maine (8-6) tied the game with just 35 seconds left in regulation when Deedra Beveridge (Campden-Rockport/Camden, Maine) had her shot deflect high in the air and go in the cage. First-year forward Kayla Vaughan (Mt. View/Monroe, Maine) had the assist.

Senior goaltender Carrie Morin (Cony/Augusta, Maine) made three saves for Colby. Superchi had six stops for USM.

The Mules will play host to Connecticut College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game Saturday at 1:30 p.m. as part of Colby Family Homecoming Weekend.
