Colby doubles team pulls off upset

BRUNSWICK, MAINE --

The Colby College doubles team of sophomore Sara Hughes (Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) and senior Britt Palmedo (Deerfield/Ketchum, Idaho) upset the fourth seeded team from Bowdoin College at the ITA East Region Championships on Friday and Saturday.

Hughes and Palmedo took an 8-5 victory over Alexis Bawden and Paulette Hricko of Bowdoin in a first-round match on Friday. The Colby team then fell 8-5 in a quarterfinal match to the Amherst team of Kristin Raverta and Paige Lawrence.

In singles play, Hughes had a tight battle with MIT's Julie Koo in the first round. Koo held on for a 7-6, 3-6, (10-7 third set tie-breaker) victory. Caren Harris (Germantown/Fairview Village, Pa.) of Colby lost 6-3, 6-3 to Kate Troy of Williams in the first round.
