Colby men's hockey blanks Amherst
AMHERST, Mass. --
The Amherst College men's hockey team finished its regular season with a 5-0 loss to visiting eighth-ranked Colby College in a NESCAC match-up Saturday at Orr Rink.
Colby broke the ice late in the opening period when sophomore Cory Ernst (Bridgewater, N.S.) slapped a right-handed one-timer into the back of the net on a 2-on-1 breakaway, assisted by classmate Joel Morash (Liverpool, N.S.). The score remained 1-0 until early in the third period when the visitors reeled off four straight goals to seal the victory. Sophomore forward Nick Bayley (Cambridge, ONT) ignited the barrage, notching the first of his two scoring strikes to put the White Mules ahead, 2-0. Ernst tallied his second goal of the game to round the scoring out at 5-0.
Rookie netminder Sean Lynch (Essex Junction, VT) and Jagher combined to turn aside 23 shots for Amherst, while senior NESCAC Player of the Week J.D. Hadiaris (Saco, ME) finished with 21 to earn the shutout. With the loss, the Jeffs drop to 7-12-5 overall and 7-8-4 in league play, while Colby improves to 17-5-1 and 14-4-1.
Colby will either be the second or third seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament. The Mules will host a quarterfinal game next Saturday.
