COLCHESTER, Vt. --
Sophomore defenseman Eric Molander (Yarmouth, Maine) scored two goals to help lead No. 11 Colby College over Saint Michael's College, 8-3, Friday night at Cairns Arena. With the loss, Saint Michael's falls to 7-11-1 overall and 2-10-1 in the ECAC East, while Colby improves to 13-3-1 overall and 11-2-1 in the NESCAC.
The Purple Knights opened up the scoring on their first power play of the game, when junior forward Justin Quenneville (Montreal, Que.) found Ian Morse (Waterbury, Vt.) alone in front of the net for the goal at 9:32 of the first. Senior defenseman Daykin Marini (Broomfield, Conn.) also added an assist on the goal.
Colby responded quickly, evening things up at the 15:51 mark when Molander put a wrist shot past the glove side of freshman goalkeeper Fred Lewis (Duluth, Minn.). Less then two minutes after, junior forward Brian Chisholm (King, Ontario) skated the puck in from the corner and scored top-shelf to give the Mules a 2-1 lead.
Colby added to its lead in the second period when junior forward Judd Moldaver (Toronto, Ontario) deflected in a pass from sophomore forward Jared Gordon (Bangor, Maine), giving the Mules a 3-1 lead at the 4:36 mark. Molander also added his second goal of the game when he dumped the puck into the net from the blue line with just under 10 minutes remaining, giving Colby a 4-1 lead.
In the third, the Mules broke the game open when sophomore forward Cory Ernst (Bridgewater, Nova Scotia) scored on an assist from Patrick Walsh (Easton, Conn.) at the 6:29 mark, and freshman forward Kevin Lyons (Canton, Mass.) tallied the team's sixth goal of the game less then 90 seconds later, giving Colby at 6-1 lead over Saint Michael's.
The Purple Knights answered back, getting the team's second goal from Quenneville at the 9:30 mark of the period on an assist from freshman defenseman David Mullins (Montreal, Que.). Colby would respond on the ensuing face off though, as Gordon added his first goal of the game to give the Mules a 7-2 lead.
Nate Stanglein (Northhampton, Penn.) put one more goal on the board for Colby with six seconds remaining. Moldaver, Gordon and Ernst all had one goal and one assist for the Mules. Walsh added two assists, while Matt Kasberg, J.F. Auffrey and Nick Meintel all had one assist.
