Colby men's hockey pounds Amherst in quarterfinal game

WATERVILLE, Maine --

The Colby College men's hockey team scored six goals in the opening 13 minutes, 18 seconds of the game and never looked back in taking an 11-0 victory over Amherst College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinal game Saturday at Alfond Arena.

Colby (18-5-1), the third seed in the tourney, will move on to the NESCAC semifinals next Saturday against No. 2 Trinity at Middlebury College. Amherst ends the season at 7-13-5.

Jean-Francois Auffrey (Dieppe, N.B.) scored just 15 seconds into the game to set the tone for Colby, which has outscored the Lord Jeffs by a 16-0 margin in two games in the last eight days. The Mules took a 5-0 win at Amherst in the regular season finale last Saturday. Auffrey's quick goal set a NESCAC Tournament record for fastest opening goal (old record was 1:38). The Mules also set a record for most goals in a game.

Kevin Lyons (Canton, Mass.) scored seven minutes in and then Cory Ernst (Bridgewater, N.S.) tallied just 25 seconds later for a 3-0 lead. Auffrey, Ernst and Nick Bayley (Cambridge, Ont.) scored three goals less than three minutes apart for a 6-0 lead just 13:18 into the contest.

Brian Chisholm (King, Ontario) had four assists and Ernst had two goals and two assists to tie a NESCAC Tournament record for points in a game. Bowdoin's Chris Pelletier had four points in a single game during the 2001 tourney.

Nick Meintel (Yarmouth, Maine) and Lyons each had two goals and one assist for the Mules. Nick Bayley added one goal and two assists and now has 17 goals and 22 assists on the season. Auffrey finished with two goals, while Ross MacMillan (Charlottetown, PEI) and Patrick Walsh (Easton, Conn.) both had one goal and one assist. Nate Stanglein (Northampton, Pa.), Brock Barton (McLeods, N.B.), Jared Gordon (Bangor, Maine) and Joel Morash (Liverpool, N.S.) all had two assists.

Colby goalie J.D. Hadiaris (Saco, Maine) earned his sixth shutout of the season with 24 stops.
