Tufts men's lacrosse holds off Mules

MEDFORD, Mass. --

Despite Colby's attempts to shut him off, Tufts sophomore Bryan Griffin (West Islip, N.Y.) scored two goals and assisted on five others as the Jumbos posted an 11-9 victory over the Mules in NESCAC men's lacrosse action at Zimman Field on Saturday.

With the victory Tufts improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in NESCAC. Colby remained winless in the conference at 0-6 and dropped to 2-6 overall.

Tufts led 6-3 at the half, with Griffin collecting a goal and two assists in the second quarter. His goal came with just six seconds left in the half after Tufts called time-out to set up its offense. Colby showed no quit, scoring the first three goals of the second half to tie the score at 6-6 on a goal by junior Joshua Cleaver (Kennett Square, Pa.) at 7:18. The tying goal resulted from a sloppy turnover in front of the Tufts goal, and the tide seemed to have turned.

The Jumbos regrouped and scored the next four, including the first of the season by senior Dan Kramer (Los Angeles, Calif.), who was playing with seven classmates on Seniors Day in Medford. Griffin had two assists during the run. Colby pulled within 11-8 on sophomore Eric Seidel's (Durham, N.H.) goal at 4:37 of the fourth. Tufts would not score in the final 12 minutes, but the Mules could only get as close as 11-9 with a goal in the final minute by senior tri-captain Ben Winston (Golden, Colo.).

Senior Chris Kollar (Middle Island, N.Y.) led Tufts with three goals, while freshman Billy Granger (East Setauket, N.Y.) scored two goals with an assist in the first start of his career.

Senior tri-captain Barron Butler (Marblehead, Mass.) figured in five of Colbys goals with two scores and three assists. Freshman goalkeeper Hugh Murphy (New York, N.Y.) stopped 18 balls.
