Colby men's lacrosse beats rival Bowdoin, 13-11

WATERVILLE, Maine --

The Colby College men's lacrosse team is out of the running for a New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament bid this season, but the Mules made sure Wednesday they would have an impact on who may go to the tourney.

Colby shook off a slow start and went on to a 13-11 victory over rival Bowdoin College in a NESCAC game Wednesday.

The Mules improve to 4-7 overall and 1-7 in the league. Bowdoin is 6-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference. The Polar Bears are battling with Trinity (2-6 league) for the final spot in the upcoming seven-team NESCAC Tournament. Trinity plays at Bowdoin on Saturday to decide the final spot.

Barron Butler (Middlesex/Marblehead, Mass.) led Colby with three goals and three assists. Joshua Cleaver (Unionville/Kennett Square, Pa.) had all four of his goals in the second half and added an assist. Matt Roland (Somers/Somers, Conn.) had two goals and one assist, while Eric Seidel (Choate Rosemary/Durham, N.H.) had a pair of assists.

Bowdoin darted out to a 3-0 lead in the first 7:24 of the game, but Colby scored three goals in 38 seconds to tie the contest at 3-3 with 4:15 left. The Mules took an 8-7 lead at halftime only to see the Polar Bears tie the game at 10-10 after three quarters.

After trading goals in the first six minutes of play, Colby got the game-winning goal when Cleaver scored off an assist from Butler with 8:57 remaining. The game stayed that way until the Mules got an insurance goal from Cleaver with 30 seconds left.

Kyle Courtiss (Loomis Chaffee/Duxbury, Mass.) paced Bowdoin with four goals and one assist. Connor Fitzgerald (Hingham/Hingham, Mass.) added two goals and one assist.

Colby goaltender Matthew LaPaglia (Delbarton/Upper Montclair, N.J.) made 13 saves and assisted on Cleaver's final goal with 30 seconds left.
