Colby softball team goes 1-1 at tourney

WATERVILLE, Maine --

Deana Davidian (Pelham, N.Y.) set a New England Small College Athletic Conference record for most hits in a tournament with seven to lead Tufts University to two victories on the first day of play at the NESCAC Softball Championships at Colby College's Crafts Field on Saturday.

Davidian, the Jumbos' leadoff hitter, had three hits in a 4-0 victory over Colby and went 4-for-4 in Tufts' 4-0 win against Williams College in the double-elimination tournament.

Tufts (24-10), the two-time defending NESCAC champs, will play in Sunday's championship game at 12:30 p.m. Colby, which took a 4-0 win against Middlebury in its other game Saturday, and Williams will play in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Williams took a 7-1 win against Middlebury in the third game of the day and eliminated the Panthers (17-14) from the tourney.

Davidian broke the old tournament record of five hits in a tournament and also tied the single-game record with her four hits against Williams (15-15).

Courtney Bongiolatti (Locust, N.J.) blasted a two-run homer and a double in the Jumbos' win against Colby (12-12). Katie Smith (Convent Station, N.J.) had two hits and Nikki Blotner (San Diego, Calif.) had two runs. Meanwhile, pitcher Pam Swidler (Stamford, Conn.) pitched a five-hit shutout and struck out four.

Wendy Bonner (Lexington, Mass.) and Carrie Morin (Augusta, Maine) both had two hits for Colby.

In Tufts' win over Williams, Lis Drake (Chelmsford, Mass.) had a home run and Bongiolatti had a two-run double. Caroline Grieco (Manasquan, N.J.) pitched a six-hit shutout.

In Colby's win over Middlebury, first-year pitcher Lauren Olmsted (Lexington, Mass.) threw a four-hit shutout in improving to 7-4 this season. Olmsted helped her own cause with seven assists and an RBI. Kate Hurd (Cumberland, Maine), who also had seven assists at second base, had two hits and one run, Shannon Emerson (West Friendship, Md.) had two hits and two runs, Bonner had two hits, an RBI and one run, and Annette Caswell (Bucksport, Maine) also had two hits.

Christina Freyer (Denver, Colo) had two hits in both losses for Middlebury.

Kerri McMahon (Denville, N.J.) tripled among her two hits and had two runs for Williams in the win over Middlebury. Kate DeLuca (Milford, Mass.) pitched a complete game and Kristin Massimiano (Pittsfield, Mass.) had two hits and two runs.
