Women's basketball tops Elmira in Salem State Tournament
SALEM, Mass. --
The 23rd-ranked Colby College women's basketball team showed no signs of slowing down after a long holiday break with an 82-62 victory over Elmira College in the opening round of the Salem State Tournament on Sunday.
The Mules (6-0) will play the Salem State/Pitt-Bradford winner in the championship game Monday at 5 p.m.
Senior center Sarah Walsh (Seton Keough/Catonsville, Md.) led Colby with 18 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Senior forward Christine O'Donnell (Salem/Salem, Mass.) came back to her hometown and added 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting, six rebounds, five steals and three assists.
The Mules led just 34-26 at halftime, but scored 48 points in the second half to turn the game into a rout. Colby shot 48 percent from the field and had a 50-23 advantage on the boards.
Sophomore forward Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Colby. Senior point guard Bianca Belcher (Lewiston/Lewiston, Maine) finished with 13 points and senior guard Drea DeAngelo (Sycamore/Cincinnati, Ohio) had seven points and four boards.
Elmira, from the Empire 8 Conference in New York, got 13 points each from Angela Vanier and Samantha Bedford.
