A. Lathrop, Saunders strong in giant slalom
PROSPECT, Vt. --
Abbi Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.) took second in the women's giant slalom and Rob Saunders (Rowland Hall-St. Marks/Park City, Utah) was fourth in the men's giant slalom for the Colby College alpine ski teams at the first day of the Williams Carnival on Friday.
Abbi Lathrop had a time of 1 minute, 3.16 seconds on her first run and then had a 1:02.40 for a two-run total time of 2:05.56. She helped the Colby women take second place behind the University of Vermont in the giant slalom competition. Vermont's Jamie Kingsbury, the main rival of the Lathrop sisters this ski season, won the event with a 2:03.55.
Jenny Lathrop (Green Mountain Valley/North Conway, N.H.) was seventh for Colby in 2:08.29. Caitlin Healey (Wachussett MT/Fitchburg, Mass.) took 24th in 2:14.68 and Colby teammate Caroline Riss (Gould Academy/Madison, N.H.) was 25th with a 2:14.98.
Saunders was a strong fourth for the Colby men, who took sixth place in the giant slalom. He had a 1:01.61 on his first run and a 59.89 for a 2:01.50 two-run total. Vermont's James Cochran won with a 1:59.87.
Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.) placed 21st in 2:04.72 and Charlie Reed (Winter Sports School/Park City, Utah) was 28th with a 2:06.91.
Colby's Nordic teams each placed ninth in 10K free technique competition.
For the Colby women, Marisa Sowles (Cumberland, Maine) placed 32nd in 37:01.9 and Anna Carvill (Milford, N.H.) was 34th with a 37:12.2.
Colin Witherill (Cumberland, Maine) led the Colby men with a 34th place finish in 30:30.0.
Competition continues Saturday as Jenny Lathrop looks for her fifth slalom victory of the season.
