J. Lathrop wins Eastern title in slalom

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. --

Jenny Lathrop (North Conway, N.H.) is an Eastern champion in her first year at Colby College.

Lathrop won the slalom for the fifth time this season in capturing the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association title at the Middlebury Winter Carnival on Friday.

Lathrop, a first-year student, led with a 51.83 after the first run for the Colby alpine team. Vermont's Hilary McCloy was in second at that point with a 51.89. Lathrop finished with a blazing 45.62 on her second run for the fastest time in that heat as well. McCloy, who ended up third, had a 47.17.

Lathrop has won five of the six slalom races this season, losing only when she stumbled and settled for seventh place in the Vermont Winter Carnival. She has a legitimate chance at winning the NCAA slalom championship at the meet on March 5-8 at Hanover, N.H.

Abbi Lathrop (Conway, N.H.) placed 11th with runs of 56.44 and a fast 46.08. Nicole Wessen (Rockland, Mass.) took 23rd with a 57.09 and a 47.96 and Caitlin Healey (Fitchburg, Mass.) placed 31st. The Colby women took third place in the slalom with 100 points.

Warner Nickerson (Tilton, N.H.) placed 10th with runs of 41.70 and 46.78 for the Colby men, who took fourth place in the slalom. Charlie Reed (Park City, Utah) was 13th and Noah Siebeck-Smith was 19th for the Mules.

The Colby men's Nordic team was eighth in the 10K free technique, as Kris Dobie (Walpole, N.H.) placed 31st in 28:35.2. Colin Witherill (Cumberland, Maine) was 35th in 29:04.8.

The women's Nordic team was ninth in the 5K free technique. Marisa Sowles (Cumberland, Maine) placed 31st in 15:23.9 and Anna Carvill (Milford, N.H.) took 34th in 15:30.9.
