Colby softball drops Thomas, Lawrence

HILTON HEAD, S.C. --

First-year pitcher Lauren Olmsted (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) threw her first collegiate shutout in Colby College's 3-0 win over Lawrence University and the Mules also pulled out a thrilling 3-2 victory against local rival Thomas College in softball in Florida on Friday.

Olmsted struck out three, walked one and scattered six hits in the Lawrence win. Shannon Emerson (Gleneig/West Friendship, Md.) had two hits and two runs for the Mules, while Wendy Bonner (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) drove in all three runs with a pair of hits (one a double).

The Mules (3-6) out-hit all but two of their opponents in nine games on the Florida trip.

Colby had just one hit against Thomas, but scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on a costly Terrier error to pull out the victory. Olmsted had a pinch-hit single in the seventh inning for the lone Colby hit. Olmsted and senior captain Carrie Morin (Cony/Augusta, Maine), who walked in the seventh, scored the two runs to give the Mules the win.

Toni-Lynn Robbins entered the game in the fourth inning and earned the win.

Colby will play again Saturday, April 5 at Pine Manor College starting at 1 p.m.
