Colby softball gets split with defending champs
LEWISTON, Maine --
Lauren Olmsted (Lexington, Mass.) threw a complete game and Wendy Bonner (Lexington, Mass.) went 3-for-4 to help the Colby College softball team pull of a 5-2 upset of Tufts University in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Bates College.
Colby (5-7) beat the defending New England Small College Athletic Conference champs. In the first game, Tufts took an 8-0 victory.
Bonner ripped a two-run homer in a four-run sixth inning that gave the Mules the lead for good. Emily Allen (Suffield, Conn.) added two hits, including an RBI single, and Michaelyn Bortolotti (Hanover, Mass.) also had two hits.
Olmsted allowed six hits, struck out three and walked four to earn the victory.
In the opener, Liz Drake had a homer while going 2-for-2 for Tufts.
Olmsted and Toni-Lynn Robbins (Appleton, Maine) had the lone hits for Colby in the first game.
Colby will play host to Husson College at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
