Colby softball splits with Bowdoin

WATERVILLE, Maine --

Lauren Olmsted (Lexington, Mass.) went the distance and added an RBI single as the Colby College softball team took a 3-2 victory over Bowdoin College in the first game of a doubleheader at Crafts Field on Wednesday.

Bowdoin came back to take a 2-1 victory over the Mules in the nightcap. The two teams are tied with 2-2 records in the NESCAC East behind division leader Tufts (5-1).

Shannon Emerson (West Friendship, Md.) broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a double that scored Annette Caswell (Bucksport, Maine) with the eventual game-winning run. Wendy Bonner (Lexington, Mass.) and Caswell each went 2-for-3 in the opener.

In the second game, the Polar Bears did all their damage with two outs in scoring twice in the second inning. Britney Carr (Conway, N.H.) and Caroline Quinn (Rumson, N.J.) each singled and scored in the second inning.

Colby (6-8) wasted a solid outing from pitcher Toni-Lynn Robbins (Appleton, Maine), who had six strikeouts. The Mules left 10 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the first and second innings. Kate Hurd (Cumberland, Maine) had three hits for the Mules and Kara Fagan (Arlington, Va.) had an RBI double.

Colby will play host to Maine-Farmington at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
