Colby softball sweeps past Bates

LEWISTON, Maine --

The Colby College softball team moved one step closer to clinching a spot in the New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of rival Bates College on Friday.

The Mules held on for a 3-2 win in the first game and then exploded for five runs in the eighth inning in a 6-1 win in the nightcap.

Lauren Olmsted moved to 5-3 on the season by pitching a complete game in the opener. Annette Caswell had three hits, Wendy Bonner scored twice and had two hits and Shannon Emerson walked three times and scored once for the Mules (9-10, 4-2 NESCAC East).

Colby scored twice in the fifth inning and then Caswell doubled home Bonner in the top of the seventh with an insurance run for a 3-0 lead. Bates scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but Olmsted worked out of a jam for the win.

In the second game, Toni-Lynn Robbins worked all eight innings and allowed just four hits for the Mules. Olmsted had a two-run double, while Emerson, Bonner and Caswell each had RBI singles in the five-run eighth inning.

Kate Hurd went 2-for-3 and Caswell also had two hits for Colby.

The Mules will two games against Trinity College at noon Sunday in NESCAC East action. Colby will clinch a berth in the NESCAC tourney with two victories.
